Learning Outcomes

The course provides detailed knowledge of the procedural elements of international arbitration, using legislation based on the UNCITRAL Model Law, regional Arbitration law, and the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. It is suitable for anyone wishing to understand this topic generally, as a party representative or witness as well as for those who aim to practice as an international arbitrator.   • Identify, explain and apply the legal procedural principles, rules and agreements relevant to the conduct of international arbitration.
  • Evaluate and apply the principles and legal requirements of international arbitration.
  • Evaluate issues and apply the principles of the UNCITRAL Model Law as well as a regional arbitration law.
  • Demonstrate practical skills required to prepare for and progress an international arbitration.
  • Demonstrate skill in controlling an international arbitration, communicating effectively with the parties, applying the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules and adopting appropriate procedures.

Course Delivery

Course is delivered online via Zoom over a period of three months, with a combination of private study and 6 half days online tutorials starting at 18:00 (GMT+3) on weekdays (for more see Course Schedule).

Entry Requirements

Training and assessment are carried out in English. Candidates shall be in both written and spoken English that is, as a minimum, equivalent to the IELTS level 7 or a score of 94 – 101 in the TOEFL. CIArb issues this advice as a guideline and, while it will not require any evidence of this standard prior to enrolment on a course, candidates who do not have this standard of English may be disadvantaged.

Assessment

Ordinarily, these exams are undertaken in person at examination centers. However, owing to the exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, all CIArb exams are being changed to ‘coursework’ that candidates will have 48 consecutive hours to complete within 5 days ‘at home’. Candidates must achieve a minimum overall mark of 65 % to pass the assessment. The assessment fee is not included in the course fee, must be registered and paid for separately. In case the assessment is done successfully candidates receive a certificate on completing the course.

CIArb Membership

Successful completion of both the course and assessment is an essential requirement for qualification as a Member of CIArb (MCIArb), and for those who aim to practice as an international arbitrator.

Registration

Participants are requested to complete the Course Application Form and return it to Elizaveta Mikaelyan. Upon successful registration on the course, candidates will receive a booking confirmation. Joining instructions and course materials will be available approximately 3 weeks before the course start date.
